Bringing Surgery to the 21st Century: Feasibility Verification of Real-Time Tissue Analysis During Surgery
Olfactomics Ltd is a Finnish university-based spinoff company developing a novel technology for intraoperative, real-time surgical tissue assessment fully aligned with current clinical workflow and instrumentation.
There is a global economy-justified need for real-time analysis in surgery. The Olfactomics device is compatible with existing surgical instrumentation and uninterrupted surgical workflow. It can be efficiently implemented to 835 000 breast surgeries every year; the demand is growing.
User Needs and Benefits
Cancer tumor removal operation is based on preoperative imaging and postoperative pathological examination. Too much or too little tissue might be removed. If all cancer is not removed in the operation, a reoperation is needed, leading to additional costs, impaired cost-effectiveness and impaired quality of life of the patient.
The breakthrough innovative device allows the surgeon to analyse the operated tissue in real-time during cancer surgery leading to optimal tissue removal. The rate of reoperation is significantly reduced.
Project Goals and Results
Saving 160 000 women from unnecessary reoperations and one billion € in healthcare costs yearly.
- The total budget is 71 429 €
- The grant is 50 000 €
